Before you start something like this you should know who you're talkin to you should know who you're talkin right like you should do your research most definitely you should know the guy on the other side of the table and you know I'm saying I want I want to start you know I have to get you started recording this right show record and I I want to start by thanking you for coming down here you know you drive down from Philly hour and 40 minutes my friend got your I appreciate you bro I just was a lot of character yet he who you are as a person and I reached out to you you know to do this because I have little to no knowledge on how to do it right and you aren't here if that's what you do that's what I do but now it's doing it about five years every Sunday like you've been doing this for your church you went to school for it you're an audio engineer right so in my mind I thought I need to be more vocal about what it is that we're doing as a business and and also I feel like these conversations document they did their to Evergreen man's Evergreen so basically for anybody's listen to this thing for the first time that don't know who was the guy on the other side of the table talking to that I'm the man who who are you what it is that you do my name is Mohammed Ismail I own cap swag stores and online site along with multiple retail locations down the shore the online site and operated by me and my business partner will chat and you know we've been in business for a few years and you know we just consider ourselves Builders it's what we do you just want to build and build a better life for us for a family or our staff members with so that that's who we are awesome awesome so cats wag is it kept swag.com yeah so initially keep it real with you that it's funny that you asked about the knee right because the name started off as a joke honestly right so I'm over here you know my wife is pregnant at the time and where we're having our first born kid and you know when a my mind I'm thinking this kid got to go to school like this is pumping in my head every day so you know I'm I'm coming up with Concepts and I use for this business that I want to build gun to head where industry like this is what initially how the name came along and I'm thinking are cool I'm dyslexic you know I am going to let you know that I am Joe now so I'm like I got to find something that's easy to spell and that's catchy and that is going to resonate with customers and also as going to resonate with Google it's funny you say that you say that nothing but when it comes to name and write always the most of my students they're like oh my God my name my name people spend a lot of time on their name and then when it gets wet then you can relate and I talked about the time their name is important on for search ability if I'm going on Google and I'm going to go look for Capps way I don't I'm not going to type in cat_Square swag none of that not so that's what they're not choosing the name and they can't find it on so short and can't find it nowhere else but it still decide to use that name and for you say You Can't Sweat everywhere and it was important so I put a lot of thought into the name on an honor nishal level not because I'm obsessed over and they even if we know some people you meet them they want to start a business so they're out there like trying to take the cat logo best name for like years that's not where I was about to stay for a week straight up trying to get it done I need to get this name I need to get my I need to get my brand identity up and running immediately and then I need to focus on building the business cuz I don't care how good your logo looks and your name was if you ain't got no business what you have is a cute idea you have nothing else so so I was trying to tell you you know how came about as a joke right so I'm like thinking about the name he something for my I can I burn easily in the computer you know regularly and then also I need to be something that I can really get behind so I'm thinking I'm thinking I might tap tap I needed something to do with Edward no don't do that that's right and the more research I did on the name the more I realized it was the name wow so people associate the name swag would what what is swag to you when I say swag fashion it's like I want you to look up the word swag okay on your phone right now it came to me like God was whispering in my ears and listen to look up just look it up right now yes wag many look it up swag to refer to a body book goods often up team illegally because your friend has a bag of Swag does not make him her if pirate keep going adore the patch of a wooden leg might say otherwise generally means Loop booty or stuff in a bag up at excited party course a lot said the word swag once had many meanings such a stuff we all get if you keep looking down on that right you're going to find a section about Swag awesome unique promotional products that are giving away two people Jonas and ever more about that so when I read that I thought to myself this is it this represents the current and in the current was nothing but a represent my visual you no idea of what does this is the look like immediately care but it also represents lifestyle The future of where I knew this wasn't going to go and the promotional side of it I always knew that one way or another that's what we needed to be the key so many conceptual things that I felt important seven letters easy to read. Com not about CA not. BBB rating by the go into that is a business., yes or chewable because that's how can a mine is going to think I had the website set up like like what was it 7 years ago wow you don't like online shopping and credibility was not always there like if you think back to back in the day when you was mine online did you think that you're going to receive all the groups that in order fraudulent activity every website was suspect unless it was that's hot websites but you place an order you like waiting whether you were going to get your items are not so to add anything but you already behind a gun you have to add. Com what else you going to Israel. Org no. No. Close how like how did this all start man like to take me back to the listeners anybody's in this room watching listening whatever take me back to the very first idea like how this all started when I told you like we were talking about earlier we talked about our backgrounds and I was really trying to get to know you as a person you know I'm saying we knew each other once before talked on the phone but we never really knew each other so I told you before I'm from Brooklyn exactly where I'm from I grew up there I lived out there for about 18 years then my family moved out to Jersey and I was about 19 so growing up in that environment it really it really it made an impression of it right like you have to be fresh for the way that you couldn't go to school without the right sneakers are mad at me and I was just I mean you could hold your head up bro I think it was that kind of situation so in it in an urban and urban Equity but that comes along with that's why companies like Nike oh Allah ya they are a lot to learn a lot to Urban environments because they built that business so that mindset right or wrong because we don't know if it's right or wrong right right that really left an impact on me as a person you know it's a nice of dating a girl you you're you're talking about growing up in that environment and understanding the Dynamics of what that was to a kid growing up in that environment so I carried that we need for the rest of my life so you know growing up in that area I will see a lot of different stores like sneakers stores apparel stores you know hat stores different kind of businesses and I always looked at those stores rest of it first of all you know if you grew up in the urban environment changes are you know your your family is not too well-off right if they were you probably been living in different area just right it's true a lot of times when I went to those stores I went to know like I was going to a museum look but don't touch right so I saw the impact that those retail locations on the community and then I also saw the collective of different businesses that were in their house they did one of the stores do you know talk to their credit that I really I really looked at closely back then you know was a cap store on 5th Avenue and between 55th and 54th. You own this business for a long time like I was like in elementary school so it's not really have some business for 30 years I looked at that business and then when we move down to Jersey and we open the Jersey you know what we can get into that a different conversation I looked at what was available here to the customer first and what was missing that kind of business headwear business where was life sounds fire nobody was being not like that and I saw these guys weren't you know they were doing their thing and it will soon extend but they missed out on a lot of that didn't cater to Lifestyle Market okay they cater to the Casual sports fan going to stand right I feel like a kid in a lifestyle marketing place on Market that I need to be treated so when I came into this area I really and I came into this area selling different with a different business I really looked at that with the microscope is that okay cool if we get into this business if we get it to headwear as an initial business can we do a better job at the people and the people that were doing it if you can and you do it and if you can't right right so that that's kind of how you initially started I was involved in a different business and I saw an opportunity to bring value to the area by doing that I was I was out of necessity night and then pouring part that I like about it is that you you you found something I was missing it in in an industry of something like that you say it was lifestyle so people is doing it with the winter hats or whatever but they were doing missing the lifestyle part of it so you jumped in there and you nice it down to just hacks you ain't go ahead and set off the red I'm going to stop at stocks close all that you know so I think it is important for people to to know that like if you don't get into a business we say all the time to send niches bring riches yes you can you can bring other things into your business later on but at the beginning You Gotta Have It Focus are you competing against people that have been doing something for 20 years right how you going to compete against that level of crap unless you're taking what they do it's like they're not just going to hand it to you for a wake up I don't know what they're doing right I see where he's missing he's been successful to a circus tent for 20 years got to be doing something right can be doing everything wrong you know I know it's easy to think that but if that's wrong so in order to do that you don't know what to bring that level of crap to the situation you got to respect the crap yeah right there's no need to recreate so you have to learn and say I don't know I need to learn as much as I can and in the process I need to slim it down and simplify it for myself and my customer you learn right and then you can better it how you want to go to bed or something you don't know what it is the right right you know I'm saying but you can have all the ideas in the world about making it this thing you know in the future but you have to learn what the business is initially like I was not have to learn all the leads all the sports it was like it was a whole different lifestyle like I was a Knicks fan growing up so you don't even want to watch the game the front yard sales ain't so it's like I wasn't really that big of a fan when I start a business can I keep it real with you I became more of a fan out of the respect for some of the teams that were involved and how much they meant to me and my lifestyle right Sports have to learn about headwear John would like the sizes size had to learn about like the like okay so when you approach a business your bias your internal bias is something that stops you from really looking at the full scope of it so for example of me growing up in the Hood in a lifestyle Market what was my focus my focus was lifestyle trim so for example lifestyle Trends would be like snapback hats you know the time when you first took took off that was a bit of a fan customer product so I have to learn a lot more about them and I'll come to find out fan customer the biggest business because they consistent train comes out the now that's your consistent thing right so we can order for you to like be successful or something you got to take advantage of trend and lifestyle but you also have to understand the core Market of the business is Spanish so in the head where business specifically there is different categories of products that people wear what you where is not with the guy that's coaching the Little League teams going to wear so I'm not trying to cater to just likes I'm trying to get to the Parker so I had to learn about that the different customer what product they were looking for I can actually do my research on and I come with the biggest selling silhouette is not offended or snapback hat it was actually a 39-39 3930 Flexfit I need to find out that I was a biggest selling come to find out it that's it sells the most because the fan customer is the core of the business market research man Market researcher Stephanie important like you can just go into a business and not do the that the market research route to order what is the Odeon look like who is it that one person I was two people got to find that one person in the market that you going to serve to who is this person what's the age what do they do what like what is them market research that you're doing and most people sit that stuff you know they just want to jump right in and put in the work over learning man like you're not committed if you're not going to be committed to the crowd you're not going to succeed bro you know if you're not willing to do the the research beforehand you lost before you started it honestly you know I'm saying so like for me that was like that was just what needs to be done pre pre requisites you can't ask then you start a bit like you know when you start a business your family has to be willing to support your decision for him so all of the all of the sacrifices that you make the late nights right the times where people are doing that thing you got work the weekends the family gathering those are sacrifices brother you need to make your significant other in your family has to understand what those if they can't get behind you with the respect that I'm going to be successful in your hair everyday talk about this your family and friends are thinking that I want you to ask yourself an honest question are you giving them every reason to not think that why are you showing them that you're serious about yourself that you're dedicated to your craft that you're doing the research that you understand it that you've taken the time to understand A Minor Details of Brandon lettering quantity of letters how it was going to be received by search I mean the people are you really doing if you're not doing that to your life when somebody marries an entrepreneur they'd come at a pseudo entrepreneur accounting for 5 in the morning last night me and her both of us for like 15 apiece how are you going to ask somebody to commit to that if they don't view you as a serious person and what it comes to your crap the research is the minimum that you should be doing it's a prerequisite to entering the market you cannot do that you cannot answer the markets like the toll that you hate you just can't come in so how many years have you been in business man but I feel like I'm going to keep it real with you bro I feel like I've been doing this since I was four wow you know you know you know that guy no jumper no jumper podcast I don't get it. Yeah he got he got a season he got a show called no jumper I'm the no jumper I can't play no instruments, artistically inclined I can't draw and I'm dyslexic how to be good at something personal for me to be great at something so growing on my father was always involved you work for somebody for a while and then he would have like a flea market hustle okay I'll Africans bro so what he did was you know you work for somebody had his little side hustle and you will wake me up at like 4:05 in the morning get a truck I'm talking about I was like 10 and he really go get in the truck was go to the flea market and the best part of me was we got you know I'm saying Stacy from like you to Papi store on the truck at the coffee head to the flea market work outside all day in the Sun come back do it again all weekend long and I saw the hustle from like a beat like the beginning stages of what it took to make something work to save enough money to where is because then open a business in our in our neighborhood so I don't know if the D50 open a business on 72nd and 5th Avenue so about a mile away just regular clothes for neighborhood and now you open a business on business I can we do a crazy ship though. He would do crazy s*** like like one day we was in the store and he was like give me a dollars after school was built he give me a call when you get a couple dollars I could buy some old newspapers I'm like why I don't answer questions at the newspapers I took the money went to go with us start cutting up the music is like from all over the floor like what he's like I told you don't just do what I'm asked to do it again my father's with Middle Eastern family not supposed to ask a question is do what I ask you to do cut cut the newspapers up throwing all over the floor no, from all of them is that a cool good now go sit on the counter I want to see behind the counter start seeing customers what the hell's going on till I get him to send you the story is no customers in there so he's like coming up with these creative like skis they walk in is the oldest newspapers on the floor they think emotion going on that's like oh s*** you sell stereo equipment and get them in here and put my father was like holy was Lethal at like marching by Grassroots marketing another time you know he had these windows in front of the store and he would like this guy was like you watch them put together a window like a like a front store window was like watching aramex work like straight-up you would come get all this construction paper like wild color is make his signs you know like it was a crap crap I washed it and he would do s*** like you would put my call clock upside down a window customer walked in one day she said your clock is upside down next customer, you have the clock is upside down and she got batteries and tasting it charges this is how I learned so much about just how to how to engage people without before speaking to them and the power of just creative Market from this guy that's like he came to this country not knowing how to speak any English open the business and have to find a way to heat his fortune it's right so you know I'm lucky bro I'm not going to lie I'm not I grew up in an environment where are you know I have my father really educate me on those tapes I think early in life you don't really understand or appreciate the value of you think you're being punished because you put a time into man but you can't we learned that man lindex even myself man like I learned some of that like that on me like a living by then it was like planting the seeds leader would there be if they don't guide you through the path that not only did they go through but they didn't know that okay I went through this way this is why I work in this is who I didn't work so don't go that way but still yet when you I think I think that that's the job of a parent yet to set the you know you supposed to set the seeds and let let the situation plurals one of the most important things I'm going to say that my father taught me about anything else was character character like the type of character that you have when things are going wrong and how you treat the family and friends in your partner's when things did not work out cuz I business end up not working out and I'm losing a lot of money but he can maintain his character he did not do wrong what it was easy to do wrong. That was at the time I was young dumb I didn't understand what was that in his mind you was like whatever character you know that was first growing up I thought the most important lesson with the sales of the older I get the more I understand that is character you know what he did when people would not look that was so I can honestly say Lily the man has scary because my father was I right but cheap this is the quality of just a quality Integrity that he kept during during times where things were difficult that's helped me a lot you know and then you just as sales you know this guy is a he's a beast bro in terms of sales so what would you say it's the most important character to have a say entrepreneur and business owner look like what do you what do you consider one of the most important characters as a business owner to be resilient okay if everything that that happens to you breaks you down inside you're done before you start going to be tough bro, all the stuff that you do that fence if you sit down linger about everything that happened to that did not go your way how much time and energy are you spend spending doing what works you're not right so you like a conversation mean you had earlier right right retail was not working out the way you expect that you meant to say to whatever the case maybe I just happened to be there for their first retail experience is not usually a good one by the way that happened to the subway guy you know somebody you open the second one the first one so cut a bottle say things that were like not but then you was right true not insulting like the little tell them like this is what it is right you should know that you need to know that this is what like for example your rodecaster pro might like your 100% committed to this piece of technology if somebody comes to you and your son that you need to you need to educate them he would educate we have to educate Sy content is important to know because how can I like you selling this car but I don't really know what this coverage is like the same as the other craft I can just put water in a patient with me on what their product is so I sent insult people would take insult to it because of his conviction but they would respect the fact that we had conviction is what it is that he was doing so he thought that that was not wrote Ask Rose if he was going to tell you an educate you whether you like it or not and because of that they will walk away the condo to come back. So he was you know he's like that so I got a first-class education in in that side of things granted I'm like the worst student ever you know I'm saying like academically I'm just not a good student but I got like a real world experience apprenticeship and I have my my experience at the cup happen to come out of my father's I was I was fortunate to have a lot of people have that so right it's important to have a role model in business or in Mentor know a lot of people now we were so quick to say that so it's not working it ain't work or like it just want to give up but I think what needs to happen you to find someone that has been through it that knows that it work and you find out why it's not working for you because it works other people they've done it to me that comes with a level of humility think about you as a as a businessman are you got your own right, Creations right how hard is it for some people to just say you look man I don't know I guess what it is like to pick your brain humility is a powerful thing broke right when somebody comes to you like that it's hard for me to say no right when you come when you first step is she most deals that I seen that people did not get what they wanted to get was because they didn't approach the situation with a level of humidity right now I would not like not actually not understanding your own your volume that's not what I mean right cuz you really could use against yet if you're not using a correctly not doing it but I'm talking about strictly humility in a scenario so for example right when you approach when when when I wanted to look into this podcast because I built this room specifically to do this I'm not on the Joe Rogan way right like I've been knowing that this was a thing right I have a soundproof built out room that's 2 years old nice to thank you I appreciate it so when I wanted to do this I'm not it's not my kid so I reached out to you you you no credit to you now you know what it is that we're building it and you look at the past in the future you're not a dumb dude so you see all that you're like jealous of me and we just to work right I'll give another example I've had relationships with people wear I'm like listen to We want to build this let's be involved right and they're like all right cool so what is the work that's involved and I'll list the work that we need to get done and I'm not doing this is what I can afford to pay more that's right now because this is a budding Enterprise was just in the beginning stages of being something right in terms of that product get right and I'll see what this is what I can afford to pay in my mind I'm thinking I'm not paying this much are committed to this level didn't work for this is not actually thinking like six months alone you're so stuck on that initial offer I think she passed out there because they have different for us I got to do this one time I got to do this but they're not thinking this could be bigger than anything that I was doing I have to pay attention because let me do my research figure out if this is something to respect or not right right right so they like situations the beginning is always the beginning it's always a lowest beginning of the story is not where it is and you know and I know as business owner was going to find the answer for what we need to do a nobody stopping at know if I saw a post on 50 psi call a 15 month old supposed to say okay you can help me do it when you can watch me whip AR test says a lot that's a strong that's a strong statement not to be no that's not the point this is so different right I'm going to do right now you can you can start and we can start together and we we don't know where it's going to be right like I explained to you to fill situation where he started with that employees not part of why does people think about things like that and say like look this is somebody I work with is I feel like you're committed and now the resources to do it I don't know if I feel like people over value their time you know I like Rich what's a value our time right now everybody's playing video games or these people are on something we could do something together but they know they want to jump on that opportunity is that window closes and he find an internship you know the internet is like this the situation Opera yo what's my star I'm going to go to the mall with me doing that when can I start nothing like those teams occur regularly don't shortchange your hustle don't shortchange your hustle guy incredibly for couple hundred bucks why would you alienate a relationship what the hell was talking to her earlier look at who you're dealing with right maybe a couple thousand right okay is another way to view right it's who you're dealing with is worth more than that about the money or the money relationship f*** the money forgot to put a Shell station think about what the relationship is and whether or not it's more valuable than. Dollar amount right so that person is only thing about dollar amount you can already see you're not even seeing like they're not thinking behind tell me the tell me the vision like what is it the only thinking imma get this much money to be this much work and that's it but then I already the wrong person for the job isn't that interim is more committed than they are write it willing to do it for free it just it just want to put their foot in it for Freedom like for free so imagine I don't know how you don't know a lot of people have perspectives different I don't know how people feel about internship programs and stuff like that I think you're amazing bro real talk you talk about mentorship you talk about building with somebody you talked about building your own job before it's there I love it I love it I love what it means if it's used correctly right in front of me right if you're offering real opportunity real knowledge of really kicking game to somebody internship amazing you should definitely I don't suck my daughter's when I get to service station in life I'm going to tell him get an internship before job think about the level of did you make it okay I like to read like a second and I just business book but like all kinds of one of them one of the books that I did. Heat Gregory when you get a chance check it out it's not it's not like apple and he's like when he came back to Apple the second time we talk I want no money Imaginext Lex on them it was like they were like okay cool what do you know what he told my size I don't want no money I'm going to I'm going to take them to build this company back up where y'all coming me out I was felt like I was the biggest Flex okay because now all of a sudden everybody in the room is getting paid in you're not and you doing the job so you look at interns have a sense of power that they don't even hit only materialize when you're committed an internship love with a cicada unfit whatever your you're already like your expectations from the employer or already better cuz you committed your time to do something to help build this business you're the first one for the job is today a bar in Dubai internship for some of the stuff that we're doing the job becomes available six months into this it is Straight Outta Your tips on taking care and you got people that are willing to pay for it if they don't fit don't do it that's crazy right though it is crazy because he's just like most people people say all the time that you should do do do it's free it's like that free free for wind type things just like to really show someone that you committed your if you're willing to do it for free to watch the man to watch into taking notes and eventually they're going to give you something for that if it's that job or whatever that whatever it is if you doing it for free someone's going to pay you to do it I'm going to let me just clarify that cuz I don't want to catch em Heat at some point for the state right so be decisive and smart about where you're giving your time to okay you cuz your time is valuable but I think we're going to Netflix and chill right now let me just let me clarify that stinging by saying this be decisive and thoughtful about where you give that time to cuz your time is valuable but understand that there are things that are worth more than money they are if you are in business to succeed at to do better and I must understand that princess if you do not understand that principle I don't even think about my want to do it I don't think it's on the last list of My Mind on a lot of different scenarios because money is not the number one motivator building something is so so you know I take a take a scenario where not that I really know but you know we do it anyways the part of businessman and they're scared and I know a little bit about a business owner and I know you been doing it for years and what was what was your biggest failure and what a how did you learn from that what did that lead to as a business owner than where you're at now failure is actually one of the most important assets you can have if you hear nothing you're a dangerous person going to say because you can you can make a mistake you know so here is actually a great motivator Sierra is a little bit so I think about it think about how many things in life you fear losing if you make a mistake it's a modem its it will motivate you to get your ass up and get things done right so I don't look at Sears a bathroom I just know how to manage it you what I do with a certain level of fear but I understand is as part of mine that's part of the DNA of doing I don't let fear take advantage of me or making me emotional and logical I look at it like I'm supposed to feel that way right now, so let's say for example you know we're in our thirties now so we're not Young Bucks anymore right would like so you know we start a business we're not the thirties and it's time for us you know we used to see it's not like you're not twenties where you get internships testing the waters at this time you're out there that to hit the ball out the lot to the stadium you're out there to score every time right so when you view your thirties like that you don't need a certain level pressure units be built into it so everything that you do in the back your mind it. I got no time to waste here right that's a motivator it's not something that you should be using regular if you don't fear your family being destitute s*** man what the f*** do you feel what do you feel real real I told you before like you're you're an amazing situation where you're at your door right now you're so Nimble you like a jet ski you get in the ocean and just write a note nobody can tell you should write the bigger your organization yes cuz it will get bigger 900 get bigger the bigger your organization yet the more you're going to you're going to see your you become like a a bow isn't it a little bit harder to make that turn because so many people on the boat man people on this boat like one of those big big fishing boat guy like big ass right you're not turning unless you getting signals 30 minutes to turn they don't move like us they don't get on trending because they're a big boat think about how long it takes them to turn in those scenarios right right so I feel like your fear right now is only you when you have fear you pit it it motivates you how do you instill that same level of motivation inhibit in a staff or a bowl of 15 right now it's not that money on the line program this year's limited a job bro like that's hard for me that's difficult you know what to do so like if you fail your company feels right you have to be able to create an organization where people are so invested that they don't want you to fail because they feel like they're losing that's hard it's really really hard to do anybody that tells you that sees he's just not being honest with you you're a no-sew I don't know if you can meet me this is possible. I know how to deal with it I need to learn how to better compartmentalize that that product that energy into stop as well without making them feel fearful of their job they need to have a certain level here but not the negative type not right I'm a fire you if you don't know that's not going to work bro it's not comfortable if we fail then I don't think she's my personal goals is not so therefore I feel like fear failure so therefore I have to do the best I can do that's that's harder to do but I feel like that's the road that I'm in in my life right now like building a company culture where people understand that they have something to Boots and it's not just me they are also going to lose and I think the greatest companies in the world you say light like the guy from Apple industrial designer by Gianni I'm so they get into it I'm sure he goes up everything I don't think it works at a company what is it insulting now but if your industrial designer Rita marketing it that's your company it's yours as f****** yours man you sit on that chair you feel like it's yours everybody on that table that's no longer you think it's not all of us think that's hard that's that's a conversation me and you had the other day about the difference between a single sole proprietorship proprietorship and Corporation for a cooperation the difference is understanding the motivations of people and getting all of their strengths to working one favorite that's difficult to do that's the reason why corporations work because that's an amazing thing to succeed at okay you're you're amazing at content right right I see you're very very good at taking 15 content and find a way to monetize right that's your strength row midget that that's the truth right so you may not be great company directions to be somebody else is running the actual visits right straight up production like you do you say for you show people you may not line up every shirt correct cut every vinyl Peace Train on the patience for it organized all the designs correctly that may not be your strength you get a guy like you in the room. I can leave a company in the room a guy like that's a production manager in the room or Corporation now you have something that's something else that's why people hate corporations but at the same time they run the world right because they are a cooperation or something else that's a that's a that's a great question bro I think that fears one of them I mean it's just one of the biggest motivators fear of love I think love has to be the stronger of the two but fears one of the biggest motivators in the world right definitely definitely get people to vote business business lifestyle lifestyle what do you think what do you feel like for you right now is one of the biggest challenges like how do you how do you manage let me ask you a question how do you manage to you how do you deal with fear but you started this company in like everybody's Spotlight is on your right so how do you how do you deal with that so management fear from me it's Mississippi see some of the things you said it it motivates me to to go harder because I have people that's depending on me that I don't have the opportunity to 2 to feed the beast to be scared to make moves that would better up the situation for myself anybody else that's looking at me that's following me you know so when it comes to managing I told her I go to tell you is very very hard for me to just see Express on something because I know what I need to do to make that thing back at it you know so it's 6 night it's a mentality thing I feel with there for me and it's a lot of people at the lose the battle in their minds first so I can't hear these four letter words everybody say it is that it has to be scared I feel like that to scare you where you go to corner and cry it's just curious if you get up and make the move that you need to make and that's how I look at their you know that somebody tell me a man you got you got 30 days to move out and in and you think I'm just going to sit in the corner and be scared I'm going to spend those Thirty Days and see what I need to do to better that situation so that when that time come up I'm in a better situation to move forward its fight-or-flight yeah so I want to tell you one story real quick to put you up one story I'll try to make it short with sometime long-winded so one story that I heard that it's amazing what is his General right General he's he's leading an army into a right and they're all boats and they coming to shore it get to the shore you goes on the boats and white Simone fire well the troops are not sure what's right so how we going to leave here is a f****** motivated if used correctly if she is a in a company in Byram there is a thin line between motivational baked into the cake I'm going to lose I need to do because I'm going to lose and I fear for my job everyday you know I don't know I don't want to work like that right I want to work like that won't people honestly if anybody in the organization feels like they're probably not the right fit in the company's not going to portrait mode because I'm not doing what they supposed to do right now you got an employee they know they know what they're supposed to do they know that you're not checking in with them every 5 minutes so they know that they're doing the bare minimum so they're always thinking right but reality of it is sometimes you're the issue in the problem with the company culture bro you know you're not the right fit but I feel like we've gotten so much better as a business about the same way for you and for us you know I'm saying is true I feel like that. Has to be done like fast you got to do it fast a radical Candor Candor is a book that I had to read my last job I had it had all the managers read that puts Bixby how to lead people radically you know like basically not being around the bush and tell him his present how you're doing great you don't great you know man you just so good at that one day this present don't do something right all the sudden Ute like you know what I think it's time for us to part waste like so all these years all these months have been telling me I'm doing great I'm not doing the other side now you got to cut throat because I did this thing wrong already so it's like instead of just keeping those people around you got to get rid of them sure and find someone else that can do the job to keep the keep the job movement not it's mutually beneficial if you're at a job and you and you feel fearful every day I don't know bro like who the hell wants to look like that and then I can let you come to work everyday and I'm going again yeah we're very very fortunate in United States you know we talked about us having the same you know story where we came we both came from Africa right so we have so many options as employees in this country you don't have to work for somebody who played do you will be okay you know I'm saying trying to make dinner you will be okay yeah you'll be fine but will you be better off and who's the who's the real you got to be so you got to order it yourself, who's the problem in this scenario how many people are really doing that stuff reflecting I don't know how you would step back and say I'm managers kind of like he's an a****** but you know what I miss my Airlines how to get my shift on its kind of like I drag my feet imma bring you the Innovative disable okay maybe he needs to be an asset to get to you later who right or you know you you always find something else we have to have some kind of salt on it right I think I sit in a different I sit in a very interesting place right now she's on both sides so I think it initially I only saw it one way or another but now I see it on both sides by employees have to feel like they're going to achieve their life goals are personal notes because the business was may not be a priority for the right they may not want to deal with this new thing they may not want to do this sat with nexiq it may just want to buy a house your mother just want to buy me a car give me want to get married pay for their wedding and then those are there that's a level of ambition that's fine also is it a common mistake that that that business owners make we look at people's goals from a position from a bird's-eye view Daiso like for example I want to build a business that's my like I like my enjoy. That's my passion for my right so you hired somebody and you start they don't they don't share those Ambitions so you're quick to judge them why don't you build why don't you I think the better question for me you know in my life at this point is what the hell is your goal what is it that you want to do row right got to ask that you want to create music for your creative okay wonderful but we got a podcast then right 60% of the time I'll give you 40% what you can do what you want to do with your music will create audio experience right you know if your dad was in the business somewhere and when I was working for a corporation know that and I'm every time I interview someone always wanted a question is what are your goals what do you see yourself in this company where do you see yourself in his company let me know what are you passionate about I'm not into writing cold you know but I'm good at talkin about the software to me I'm a good speaker or I can mark it this thing right but it's you hire this person to be that colder this person is good at this other thing do you have the other thing down you don't know a nice person yet you know so we have to like how do you mine it how do you mine it that's that's my that's my that's my level right now that's where you know I'm saying as a as a somebody that needs a company what's the weather in April how do I mine that talent for the best possible application and then how do I make them understand that there's is mobility is a future you have to show them those things to do I don't care who they are they want to know it was another one of those work for a McDonald's that they can become a manager at Griffin you know when something says instilling fear when something is not working and where those people are best used right starts with a conversation when you got to conversate with them so you see a poster on the wall over there right yep that's some that's from Apple think different campaign that's an original poster okay source that poster from that think different campaign because I felt like that canteen was so strong you know they really projected a brand image that people migrated Sports apple as a technology company what day did well was it appealed to the create it I found the way to appeal to the creative in in a way that was received well you ever seen a thing so I wash I'm a nerd bro so I watch like different guys it's like the best ass like which one which one was the most effective I love it I love it so I'd like to add on them like the number one ad is actually not that it's the one where they're sitting in a stadium and it's a 1984 I think it is way the lady & Hammer into the screen but the reason why I bought them up was he has a quote that says if you judge a fish right if you judge a fish out of water by how he can walk a how can run was wrong with the fish oil right but the premise of the quote is a fish excels in the Lord on the eloquently speaking that's the way I do things right now it's great autism a fake a lot of set that setting expectations on people and then not not achieving those after seeing the the overall how good they can be a project what I think that they going to be instead of seeing who they are right now that's hard that's hard because business or is typically look at the future yet but they don't look at me like what what is this person now what are their goals now and how you know that it's not always the easiest thing right let them speak they'll tell you everything you need to know my troubles shut my mouth long enough for metformin to tell me to tell you everything but if you close your mouth and just give them the room to see listen don't tell you I feel so what they bite but they don't like they're at their morals and values system works if they're trying to build or they just trying to job right now I just want a job right to b******* right here no one no commitment whenever this opportunity and you approach someone in the company is that they may I see you a great fit for this man like I got this great management row I think you'll be grading it something that's like I'm just here I don't want no responsibility I just want to come and go you know like I don't have the time like that would sell you are they useful I make glitter Yeti are useful because the fact that they were doing something so great that I seen the opportunity for them to move higher the gladiator use them or they just don't see themselves as that and most of the time you got to make it you got to make it as plain as possible to them know how to use the thing that we talked about earlier you have to show them how they can be of value to this company or even themselves if they were to just step out of their comfort zone and the rossoneri I'm thinking I had a dispatcher for the longest like the system so well but she lacked a little bit and confidence of herself in some leadership skills because she was so friendly with the people that she was lead in it so when the sun when it was time for her to actually step up and be their leader struggle with that but that's why she was saying no but I don't think is right for me because she wasn't she's not able to manage that friendship and being their boss at the same time so it's a holiday or a valuable Yellow by book what they don't know how to separate themselves from Derek the quarter that there ain't already been an employee or a crew member and then being the leader view watch the containment no really good really really good it's like a it's it's it's a video series what Agenda podcast on the guy had this person on there and he's like a branding expert like a week ago you're talkin right now and it just popped into my head and I want to share this with you he said his four kinds of people is a hero is the guide is the victim in the Ville in a conquer every day you play a role in one of those people you play multiple roles right sometimes you're the hammer sometimes you're the guy sometimes you're the victim rights sometimes you're the villain the bad guy but he said the greatest role that you can play it is is the role of a guy don't be the hero let them be a hero let the customer Beauty hero let the employee let somebody else right make sure that they're not the victim don't be the hero let them be the hero be the guy died then to that process of making sure I could make them the person that you soften the you said that she's really great but she can't manage people cuz she know them too well I've had that happen to so what you up to do you have to be smart enough as a leader to take her out of that situation put a different shift when they don't know what it is cuz you know they can do it right they got told you to do tonight so I know you're available to do night but now probably change right now she's the deputy operations manager in a company that I left to crush-crush-crush switched it up on her jetted just that mean that that's a credit to you to being able to see that put them in a position that they can see it in is there a rockstar I don't want to name her by name right I won't blow up her head too much some reason from trying to get someone off the rip that she's very smart and she's very capable and cerebrum chewy think you know about every scenario so immediately I was like I don't think she was comfortable with myself in the role but as soon as the dynamic change within the room she you know she started to really see what I saw her right you understand of course I have to figure out whether or not that's what she wanted sometimes out of necessity you put people in a position of of our own necessity like you want the person of your leader so you push them to be a heater and then they end up disappointing because that's not what they want for that it's not so they have to be okay with it they have to want it that's a want it that I don't want the responsibility and the you know the promotion that comes along with it so I recognize that and I kind of put her in a different role in Dynamic and because of that she doesn't always go to Stephanie. They're wrapping up for about an hour and then it's so easy right what is this just a wrap it all up right to what is that thing that you say today's young entrepreneur out there somebody that has stairs just getting in the game they're just like at the hopefully active research stage and the original research right in the rate to jump in and K and but it is so distorted so scared it still don't want to throw them in the water what is that one thing that you would tell somebody right now that must be here it is the daughter got to get the hell up you got to be that guy in your life that changes your world think about a girl think about the people I thought I got into business for myself because I wanted to change my life trajectory nobody was changing it for me you want to be that guy you got to be that guy you can talk about being I know you got to get up and you can't do it when you're you know a certain point in your life I'm not going to say age because I mean people to see that 6870 so that you have to have my health and mental stability the Welsh right like the all of the things that you need in order to do it you have a window of opportunity that window is short stop playing it's not waiting short you only have a limited amount of time to get going don't think that the economics professor once talked about like how the markets move I couldn't get over at like I think was my dyslexia I couldn't get over it was it if you stand still the world moves forward that means you're behind I could enlist I said but I'm standing still I'm still where I'm at is it gives you don't get it the whole world so if you view life in that scenario you got the most the game what are you going to lose money is a s*** about that honestly is a big priority for people so they feel like I can't lose I can't come on let's keep it real how much money do you blow on thumb s*** ain't right don't count them f****** coffees and come on now put pen-to-paper to do with your life expenses and figure out what discretionary money you're f****** off anyways so you're worried about the blue that money you're ready give it to them in why are you worried about that you already blowing it so why is that even what theory do you have your fear should be you live the life of an event wow that's the fear a mediocre life I like that you didn't capitalize on who you are as a person right like why is that not like your number one priority and wife a mediocre life style that's all I live I lived a life unlived that's the worst kind of like right what did you do what sport did you actually wouldn't put your name on nothing that's amazing Works bro what is it lost money take that I don't know I feel like think about you in 30 40 years when you look back at your life has to be filled with beautiful memories with family and friends see this is a misconception right we on the Instagram way if not anybody's Snapchat and Instagram and their burgers and cheeseburgers and hot dogs when they're keeping track of all these things career fulfillment do you have because that's part of your calculation I don't care who you are you must feel like if you left your house wife you
